Stories are imbued with an enchanting power that allows them to transcend borders and unite people from diverse backgrounds. Recently, Nigerians have been captivated by the mesmerizing stories emerging from the Korean peninsula, leading to a rising interest in Korean literature within Nigeria.
This essay explores the factors contributing to this cross-cultural interchange and the attempts made to bring these two countries closer together.
When Nigeria meets Hallyu: Riding the K-Wave in Africa
There is no doubt that the Hallyu wave has become an international source of pride for Korea. Africa, especially Nigeria, has been highly receptive to Korean dramas, commonly known as K-dramas, and K-pop. These forms of media have transcended borders and connected people from different cultures in a way that was previously unimaginable.
K-dramas have captivated the hearts of Nigerian viewers with their compelling storylines, relatable characters, and unique cultural elements. Some fans have even gone ahead to learn the language to avoid the stress of reading subtitles. The emotional depth and universal themes explored in these dramas have resonated deeply with Nigerian audiences, leading to an increased interest in Korean culture.
Similarly, K-pop music has gained a massive following in Nigeria. The catchy melodies, synchronized dance routines, and charismatic performances by K-pop artists have captured the attention of music enthusiasts. This has resulted in a growing fan base that actively engages with K-pop content through social media platforms, and even organizes fan events.
Beyond entertainment value, the influence of K-dramas and K-pop extends to fostering cultural exchange between Korea and Nigeria. Through these mediums, Nigerians are exposed to various aspects of Korean culture such as language, fashion, food, literature and tradition. Likewise, Korean audiences are introduced to Nigerian culture through collaborations between artists from both countries and references in the media.

Nigeria, a country famed for its rich literary heritage, has entered a new cultural era with the introduction of Korean literature. The KCCN was founded in May 2010 by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism under the authority of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Abuja. It is the first of its kind in Africa and one of only thirty-two in the world. Every year, the Centre hosts a variety of competitions, offering an exciting venue for Nigerians to demonstrate their abilities and immerse themselves in the fascination of Korean culture. The event has a thrilling line-up of speech and writing contests that allow participants to express themselves clearly and artistically in Korean. Poetry competitions spark the candidates’ poetic hearts even more, crafting an amazing tapestry of words inspired by Korean themes and feelings. The K-pop dance and singing competitions light up the stage, captivating both performers and spectators. The Centre’s annual event not only fosters healthy competition and the chance to win prizes but also nurtures a strong love for Korea’s rich cultural heritage, promoting lasting connections between Nigerians and Koreans.
